Director’s Note — Emily Keagan

Trying new things is hard. In lockdown this was especially true for me. I remember in deep 2020, my housemates kept trying to get me to watch this one show with them. It was fairly tame but thematically covered some tense ground, nothing that hasn’t been too much for me in the past, but was too much during lockdown, it turns out. I found myself turning to my comfort shows, Bojack Horseman, Glee, Please Like Me, ya know the classics.

Something about their safety was warm. Then when the world opened up again, I found I had the same instincts with theatre, no longer hungry for something shocking and boundary pushing and instead seeking familiarity.

Into The Woods is a safe return to the world of fairy tales. It feels like that safe warm place. Act One makes me feel nostalgic for the boredom of rainy days as a child, deciding to break into the linen press, steal a pile of sheets and begin construction on my blanket fort masterpiece. Once inside I’d round up all my dolls and create the most thrilling soap opera drama. I wanted to capture that sense of innocent childhood creativity with this production.

This was made by MUST.

Monash Uni Student Theatre is an engine room of creativity, a department of the Monash Student Association that creates vibrant, innovative theatre by and with Monash students, for everybody.

Our works are diverse, ranging from new text-based and devised pieces to bold adaptations; from large-scale immersive work to intimate experiments, events, festivals and exhibitions. Nearly all roles on and off stage are performed by students, with necessary training & mentorship provided. Our emerging artists actively shape our annual program and our growing culture at MUST.

MUST has won several awards for artistic excellence including the Melbourne Fringe Festival Live Art Award. We’ve staged works at Melbourne & Adelaide Fringe, in collaboration with La Mama, MAPA, Theatre Works and fortyfivedownstairs. We are obsessed with great ideas, intriguing experiences and forging opportunities for all kinds of people to be a part of creating them.

They create the kind of theatre that blows me away every time.

This story was made on stolen land.

We present Into the Woods at Monash Uni Student Theatre on Bunurong land in South-east Kulin country. We pay our respects to Kulin elders, and we extend that respect to all First Nations people.

First Nations people have cared for this country and waterways for millenia. Their sovereignty has never been ceded, and no treaty has been signed between this colony and First Nations people.

Saying sorry isn’t enough. If you are a settler on this land, we encourage you to join us in Paying the Rent for this land.

This always was, and always will be, Aboriginal Land.
